The Oscars to introduce a new award for popularity

The letter said the academy plans to "create a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film", adding that eligibility requirements and other specifics "will be forthcoming".

It's unclear yet whether the new award will be given out at the next show, in 2019, or even what the voting criteria is going to be, but the new gong will likely mean good news for films like Black Panther and The Greatest Showman.

Warren Beatty's old! Well, the Academy plans to remedy that, and to paraphrase Bobby D's Oscar-winning song, things will change.

The requirements aren't known just yet, though we assume it will be to integrate films that are more popular with the buying public rather than exclusively the critics.

The Academy also announced a commitment to a firm three-hour telecast, as well as a move in ceremony date for the 92nd Oscars in 2020. In addition, they are planning a more "globally accessible" three-hour telecast.

It's among three changes approved on Tuesday by the Academy's board of governors. While the details of this new category have not been disclosed yet, it's safe to assume that nominees will be films that managed to please not only critics, but audiences as well.

The statement reads: "To honour all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined)".

"We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world", Hudson and Bailey wrote. What we do know, though, is that the Academy has just taken a major step in the direction of focusing more on blockbusters, which are often viewed as a kind of art form unto themselves. The 2019 ceremony will still air February 24.

Popular film? What is this? The dirty (not so) secret of the Academy Awards is that they've never really been a benchmark of excellence to begin with. "Every single one was either nominated or won Best Picture with the exception of 'Snow White, ' which was given an honorary Oscar".
