Soaring temperatures across Europe likely to break record

Spain and Portugal faced another exceptionally hot day Saturday as a heat wave that has killed three people in Spain threatened to raise temperatures to record levels.

Europe's weather warning group, Meteoalarm, has already issued red warnings - categorized as very unsafe and posing a risk to life - for much of southern Portugal and for the Badajoz province in Spain.

Temperatures in Spain and Portugal soared to near record highs on Friday as part of Europe's heatwave and governments put emergency services on alert for forest fires.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Temperatures will continue to build, but nothing quite as hot as what we saw towards the end of last week".

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern commented on the conditions: "A dry and warm one for most places this weekend, but there will be cloudy skies at times in the north west and it will be damp as well occasionally for Scotland's islands and highlands".

Heat warnings have been issued for 41 of Spain's 50 provinces as temperatures are expected to reach up to 45C.

In eastern Europe, Poland was also enduring unusually high temperatures as the hot African air pushed temperatures up to 34C.

SPAIN's heatwave has claimed the life of a road worker who collapsed and died from heat stroke.

The national temperature records for Spain and Portugal are 47.3 degrees Celsius and 47.4 degrees Celsius respectively, Mitchell said.

In northern Europe, Sweden has warned of "a high risk" of wildfires in central and southern Sweden this weekend because of the continuing dry weather and strong winds. The supermarket chain Morrisons has begun selling "wonky" flowers that have not developed properly.

'The South and East will be hottest and it will be a warm weekend for most, although cooler in the North'.

The hot weather is continuing, with temperatures forecast to reach 30 degrees Celsius in southern Britain today.

In another sign of drought, water levels in the Danube River in Budapest are about to fall to a level that will expose a small outcrop called Dearth Rock that is nearly always underwater, the National Water Management Authority said.

The Weather Outlook says the United Kingdom could then see temperatures as high as 36C next week.
