Russian PM warns NATO admission of Georgia could cause 'horrible conflict'

"It is an unprecedented attempt by the Russian side to demonstrate its own military power, which at the same time represents the use of force and threat against Georgia", Tbilisi says.

However, countries with ongoing territorial conflicts can not join the Alliance, according to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation rules.

The ministers called on Russian Federation to rethink its decision to recognise the independence of the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

In August 2008, following Russia's aggression against Georgia, the two breakaway northern regions declared independence.

Unfortunately, Russian military presence in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia continues in violation of worldwide law and commitments undertaken by Russia under the 12 August 2008 agreement, mediated by the European Union.

The minister stressed that Latvia, Lithuania and Poland want Kyiv and Tbilisi to become North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members.

The statement also mentioned Georgian citizens Davit Basharuli, Giga Otkhozoria and Archil Tatunashvili, who were killed by the occupation forces, saying Georgia has repeatedly proved unilateral fulfillment of the non-use of force, expecting similar steps from Russian Federation.

European Union foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini assured Georgia on Tuesday (12 June) that ten years after Russia's occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the European Union has not given up seeking a "true solution" to the conflict.

Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev has said that a bad conflict could emerge from Georgia's accession into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation bloc and noted that there was no real justification of such risk.

After the discussion, the Polish FM emphasised the four-country delegation's visit to Tbilisi aims to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Russian military aggression against Georgia. "What Russia did and is doing against a sovereign government is a war between Russia Georgia, it's aggression, it's an occupation and it's a violation of all worldwide norms", president Giorgi Margvelashvili told ministers from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine at a meeting in the capital Tbilisi.

NATO now supports Georgia through the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package, a set of initiatives that provides resources to strengthen Georgia's defenses.

July 12, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reaffirmed the organization's intention to accept Georgia into the Alliance.
