Ruby Rose Will Play The CW's Batwoman

Rose gained stardom when she was cast in season three of Netflix's "Orange is the New Black".

'But don't call her a hero yet.

The CW also confirmed that the character will be a lesbian - meaning that if the show is picked up, she will be the first gay character to lead a live-action superhero TV show.

CW veteran Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries, Melrose Place, Smallville) will write and executive produce the series, with recognizable names Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns also on board as executive producers.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Rose will make her first batty appearance in December, for an annual DC crossover event.

The CW was reportedly on the hunt for an out lesbian actress to portray Batwoman and found their flawless heroine in Rose. But the introduction of Batwoman is groundbreaking.

A Batwoman series is in development at The CW, which will bring Bruce Wayne's cousin, Kate Kane, to the Arrowverse. Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose will be playing the titular hero, the network announced Tuesday.

If her introduction goes over well, Rose could next headline her own series as the Gotham vigilante. In short, along with the comics-based Riverdale, they basically own CW's prime-time lineup. The show is only in the writing stages, but as long as Rose's backdoor pilot in the form of being on Arrow goes well we'll be getting one without a doubt. Indeed, Rose, with a tattoo-brandishing badass look and a character-appropriate biography, since she's openly lesbian, will embody the role of Kate Kane/Batwoman for this exciting and potentially groundbreaking CW series. Should that introduction prove successful, and should the character prove popular with the fandom, it's a good bet that the Batwoman series will get the green light for its targeted 2019-20 season. Network chief Mark Pedowitz said that while "Batman already exists in the Arrow-verse", there are "no plans at this point for the character to appear", according to USA Today.
