Perseid meteor shower peaks this weekend - here’s how to watch

The Perseid meteor shower will peak on the nights of August 11-12 and August 12-13. "You should be able to see some meteors from July 17 to August 24, with the rates increasing during the weeks before August 12 and decreasing after the 13th", NASA said in a skywatching video. So you can definitely catch them in advance.

Timeanddate.com provides tables indicating when the showers are active and even gives some nice tips on how to best watch the performance.

Muscat: The Sultanate is now witnessing the Perseids, which are the most famous meteor showers.

The storm peaks in the early morning hours (just after midnight) of August 12 and 13 - this Sunday and Monday.

"The average particle size is that of large sand grain but some small pea gravel-size meteors can cause bright fireballs that light up the sky and ground", he continued.

The showers are named after the constellation Perseus because the direction from which they come in the sky lies in the same radiant as Perseus.

The best time to see those meteors is at around 11 p.m. ET until dawn the next morning.

If you want to catch the Perseids in all their glory, a drive to the darkest place near your home should suffice.

"Relax, be patient, and let your eyes adapt to the darkness", J. Kelly Beatty, senior editor of Sky & Telescope magazine, said in a statement. For the best viewing, make sure you get away from city lights. "The Perseids will put on a great show".

If you are in a city, try to get somewhere at least somewhat sheltered from lights, maybe a park or backyard.

The annual Perseid shower occurs when the Earth's orbit crosses the path of debris thrown off by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

During the maximum, or peak, Sunday night and early Monday morning, it could be possible to catch as many as 110 meteors in an hour, or almost two per minute on average.

Those bits of cosmic dust fall into our atmosphere, creating the bright streaks we see as meteors in the night sky.
