OpenAI’s Bots Just Beat Professional DotA 2 Players

This is not the first time bots engineered by OpenAI managed to defeat human players in the immensely popular MOBA game.

In an exhibition match held in San Fransisco, OpenAI Five, a group of five bots, competed against Dota 2 casters and ex-professional players and won the best of the three exhibition match easily. Game Two was similarly one-sided, although the humans did manage to at least take one tower.

The humans were absolutely destroyed in the first match as the OpenAI FIVE bots routed them with precise long range sniper shots, slows, and silences. The company's aim is to build a team of bots which can beat a team of Dota 2's human professionals at this year's annual tournament and another big event in E-sports.

Next, OpenAI's developers plan to take the bots to Valve's official global tournament, where they'll compete against the best Dota 2 players in the world. It then faced a team of some of the world's top players (Blitz, Cap, Fogged, Merlini and Moonmeander) in a best-of-three contest. Brockman added that to overcome these challenges, the bots had to be able to develop "intuitions" about their human opponents, improvise in response to unfamiliar situations, and collaborate with one another. The AI team consists of five neural networks that train using 128,000 CPUs at once, playing 180 years' worth of matches against themselves every day. The bots are powered by five artificial neural networks trained to play the game from scratch using reinforcement learning, an iterative process that involves observation, action and feedback. The team of bots calculated a 2.9% chance of winning before the start of the game based on its heroes' lineup.

OpenAI Five will take on an active professional team during the worldwide main event in August 2018.

Regardless, the OpenAI victory is incredible impressive, even more so because only a matter of months ago it was failing to beat amateur opposition.

OpenAI Five continues to prepare for playing a team of professionals at The International.
