NASCAR Chairman Brian France arrested for DUI, possession of controlled substance

France was arrested, held overnight and released after he was arraigned on Monday morning, police said. He was released on his own recognizance.

No other information was immediately available.

France was driving a 2017 Lexus and didn't stop at a stop sign, according to police.

Additionally, it is reported that while he was being arrested, France dropped the names of some high-profile friends, including that of President Donald Trump. Officers saw indications of intoxication and found the pills during a subsequent search, police said. He's a third-generation leader of the company, which his late grandfather, Bill France Sr., founded in 1948.

TMZ said it got a statement from NASCAR on the incident, saying it was aware of it, gathering facts and that it "take [s] this as a serious matter".

France became chairman and CEO of NASCAR in 2003, a position that makes him one of the most powerful figures in sports.

He introduced a playoff system, overhauled the design of its cars, and pushed for diversity within the circuit's predominantly white, male ranks. "Rumours are always interesting, but they're seldom right".

France later told an officer called to his home that he was drinking a soda and "bumped into something". He hit a tree in 2006, also while driving a Lexus, and a witness said he "fell over his own feet" after he got out of the auto.
