Melania Trump's parents become citizens through 'chain migration'

She settled in NY in 1996 and met Trump two years later.

Beyond the additional security present at the ceremony, the Knavs followed the same process of tests, interviews, and paperwork that every other citizenship candidate has to complete.

President Donald Trump should have been moved this week when our nation of immigrants accepted two new Americans: first lady Melania Trump's parents, Amalia and Viktor Knavs.

It's unclear when they obtained their green cards, but usually, permanent residents have to hold green cards for five years before applying for citizenship. They tend to keep a low profile despite spending some time at the White House, much like how former first lady Michelle Obama's mother lived at the White House where she focused on helping raise the Obamas' daughters.

"NOT ACCEPTABLE!" Wildes told The New York Times "I suppose" the Knavses obtained citizenship through chain migration, and called it a "dirtier" way of describing family-based immigration, "a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification". First lady Melania Trump's parents have been sworn in as USA citizens.

Melania Trump became a US citizen in 2006 after marrying Trump the year before.

It's unclear when the Knavses obtained permanent residency in the US, the Times reports, but Wildes said they met the five year requirement.

"They would appreciate their privacy and we just thank everybody for their attention for this very important dialogue we're having on immigration".

The couple are natives of Slovenia, where they raised Melania, but have been in the USA for more than a decade, says their immigration lawyer, per CNBC.

She attended high school in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, and changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modeling.
