Indonesia quake: Lombok rocked by third tremor in a week

Another quake with a magnitude of 6.2 hit Indonesia's Lombok Island on Thursday.

Thousands of tourists have left Lombok since Sunday, fearing further earthquakes, some on extra flights provided by airlines and others on ferries to the neighbouring island of Bali.

Almost 1500 people have been hospitalised with serious injuries from Sunday's quake and more than 156,000 have been displaced due to the extensive damage to thousands of homes.

Workers with heavy machinery are searching the rubble of homes, schools and mosques, with hope of finding any survivors fading.

Indonesian authorities are appealing for food, clean water and medical help for the more than 156,000 people forced from their homes and 1,477 severely injured and in need of medical care.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia's disaster agency, tweeted videos on Thursday showing what appeared to be new damage to buildings and power lines. Meanwhile, officials said the epicentre of the third quake was on land and so there was no risk of a tsunami.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, felt on the nearby holiday island of Bali, measured 5.9 on the Richter scale.

Reuters has reported collapsed buildings and widespread damage, likely compounding fresh damage from quakes which have already devastated the island this month.

"It is already clear that Sunday's quake was exceptionally destructive", Christopher Rassi, the head of a Red Cross assessment team on Lombok, said in a statement.

Grieving relatives were burying their dead and medics tended to people whose broken limbs hadn't yet been treated in the days since the quake.

'She was praying when the natural disaster happened, ' said her uncle Tarna, who gave a single name.

He said: "People are always saying they need water and tarps".

Many buildings still standing on the island have been weakened. "She was trying to get out, but she got hit by a wall and fell down".

The military said it sent five planes carrying food, medicine, blankets, field tents and water tankers. "I don't think people will choose Lombok anymore this summer".

"We are still scared to go into the house".

At least 130 people were killed in the magnitude 6.9 quake that rocked the country Sunday; Greg Palkot reports.
