Hurricane heads to Hawaii as lava activity wanes

Hurricane Hector strengthened to a Category 4 storm Saturday as it churned toward the Central Pacific.

The United States National Hurricane Center said Hector was expected to remain powerful through early this week, but no coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

Hector was located about 930 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and was moving to the west at 15 mph.

Though the center of the hurricane will likely miss Hawaii, heavy rain from the storm is likely to pelt portions of the Big Island.

Big Island officials are taking precautions in advance of the storm nearing the state.

The National Hurricane Center said the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the storm's progress.

Depending on its ultimate track, the storm could bring thunderstorms, gusty winds and increased surf to parts of the island and could also cause risky rip currents off the east- and south-facing beaches.

The current Kilauea lava flow from one of about two dozen volcanic fissures that opened in the ground has been going on for 93 days, making the longest non-stop eruption on record from Kilauea's lower East Rift zone.

Hurricane Hector updated satellite imagery as of 11 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018.

Mayor Harry Kim said the session was aimed at getting staff familiar with the background regarding the storm, which was approaching the 140-degree longitude boundary into the Central Pacific.

So far, lava from Kilauea volcano destroyed buildings and homes causing thousands to evacuate nearby areas, but in mid-July, a lava bomb from the volcano hit a nearby boat and injured 23 people.

Officials urge that residents prepare an action plan if they need to shelter in place or evacuate their homes, and have an emergency kit with a minimum of 14 days of food, water and other supplies.
