Great white shark leaps from water and startles researcher

Raw video: White shark's surprise breach caught on camera off the coast of Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

A researcher poised to tag a great white shark got more than he bargained for over the weekend, when the shark leaped at his feet with its jaws open.

Greg Skomal, a state biologist and shark expert was on the pulpit of the small boat with the team from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. The video was filmed off the coast of MA and shared on Facebook by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy about 16 hours ago. Luckily, he happened to be just out of reach for the shark.

Great white sharks can get up to 20 feet long, and have powerful tails that enable them to swim up to 15 miles per hour and breach the water during an attack, says National Geographic.

The clip went live on Monday, chalking up almost 250,000 views by lunchtime on Tuesday.

"Did you see that?"

While the great white filmed off the MA coastline was around a fifth the size of a megladon, its dramatic appearance is a reminder of never becoming complacent in shark waters.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy wrote on Facebook that the organization has seen great white sharks breaching on previous research trips and received reports from fishermen and boaters who have also observed the behavior.

Separately in MA, a great white shark, estimated to be 15-feet in length, attacked a seal in Cape Cod, sending surfers scrambling to shore.

The Harbormaster's Office says the White shark sighting was confirmed around 3 p.m. off Manomet Point.
