FCA makes official trade complaint to block Jeep-like Mahindra Roxor

But it seems all bets are now off for Fiat Chrysler, which drew the U.S. trade commission's attention to Mahindra's "substantial foreign manufacturing capacity combined with its demonstrated intention to penetrate the United States market and harm FCA's goodwill and business".

The Mahindra Roxor, a two-seat all-terrain vehicle with retro Jeep styling, isn't permitted for use on United States roads, and is instead classed as a Utility Task Vehicle. The Italian & American carmaker wants to ban the sales and imports of the Mahindra Roxor in US. FCA filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission that could prevent Mahindra's vehicle from entering the market. The complaint pointed out the Mahindra Roxor is a almost identical copy of the iconic Jeep design.

FCA claims that the Mahindra Roxor infringes key characteristics of Jeep's signature design, Bloomberg reports, including the "boxy body shape with flat-appearing vertical sides and rear body ending at about the same height as the hood". Mahindra has not yet been served with the complaint and we prefer not to comment at length on the dispute at this time.

Reacting to the allegation's made by FCA to the ITC, Mahindra has released a statement which reads, "We understand that a complaint has been filed by FCA with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) against Mahindra".

Mahindra, whose auto business began 70 years ago with a license to build Willys vehicles for Asia, has their presence in several industries in United States, including information technology and mobility. "However, we have reviewed FCA's core filing and find it to be without merit", said the Mumbai-based company.

"Our action, products, and product distribution (including Roxor) both honor the legacy of the relationship and the terms of our agreements with FCA".

But the Roxor is the first vehicle to be produced - from imported knocked-down kits imported from India - at Mahindra Automotive North America's new $600 million manufacturing facility in Detroit.

Mahindra, however, hit back, pointing out to Bloomberg that the two automakers had a licensing relationship that dated back to the 1940s, including "the original agreement with Willys".

Mahindra debuted the Roxor in March but hasn't yet but the little vehicle on sale because the business has been building a dealer body.
