Disney Provides Some Pricing Details For Direct-to-Consumer Streaming Service

Disney's movie studio enjoyed blockbuster success with "Avengers: Infinity War" and "The Incredibles 2".

Like with its Marvel films, Disney had previously licensed the streaming rights for its Star Wars titles, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Up until now, after a film hit theaters, it came to digital, then Blu-ray/DVD, and finally streaming services like Netflix.

The streaming service is set to launch in 2019 with several programs, including a "live-action version" of "Lady and the Tramp", as well as a live-action "Star Wars" series directed by Jon Favreau that will cost about $100 million for 10 episodes.

Iger said that Disney was "obviously very excited" about bringing 21 Century Fox content to the new service once the acquisition of Fox's entertainment assets closes, but added that the company remained "incredibly supportive and enthusiastic" about theatrical distribution of movies. That means that the first Marvel film to jump straight to the Disney service without a Netflix pitstop will be March 2019's Captain Marvel. That being said, it is expected to land somewhere in the monthly range of $6 to $8.

Net income attributable to Disney rose to $2.92 billion, or $1.95 per share, in the quarter, compared with $2.37 billion, or $1.51 per share, a year ago. Disney's television networks also saw gains, including at ESPN, despite the higher National Basketball Association costs and lower advertising revenue.

On an adjusted basis, Disney earned $1.87 per share, below estimates of $1.95 per share.

An upcoming Star Wars TV show might be quite expensive.

Total revenue rose 7 percent to $15.23 billion, but missed analysts' average forecast of $15.34 billion.

The one business that saw a drop in revenue was also Disney's smallest segment, Consumer Products and Interactive Media.

Disney, which has been pushing up prices at its theme parks in recent years, saw the latest price hike lead to a slim 1 percent gain in U.S. theme park attendance in the period - down from an 8 percent increase last year - while hotel occupancy rates dropped to 86 percent from 88 percent.
