Death toll in Indonesia quake rises to 164

The US Geological survey reported a 5.2-magnitude quake just off the coast of Lombok between the tourist town of Senggigi and the Gili Islands on Monday at 11.50pm.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement the information from the other government bodies remained unconfirmed.

"It is already clear that Sunday's quake was exceptionally destructive", Christopher Rassi, the head of a Red Cross assessment team on Lombok, said in a statement.

Displaced residents living in shelters rushed out of their temporary homes, fearing more destruction to structures already weakened from the previous two quakes.

Indonesia's meteorological agency put the magnitude at 6.2.

A young mother who had to flee with her newborn child is one of thousands of survivors from Sunday's deadly quake on the Indonesian island of Lombok desperately waiting for aid to trickle through.

Along the coastline in North Lombok, Mr Masahiro Ishizeki and Mr Zhofry Hamid were on the way to support relief distribution operations with their local partners when they saw people running around.

More than 1,000 schools have been damaged, the organization said.

Some villages had "completely collapsed", said a Red Cross official in Lombok, Christopher Rassi.

Many frightened villagers are staying under tents or tarpaulins dotted along roads or in parched rice fields.

Rescue workers were still digging through rubble and trying to reach survivors of Sunday's natural disaster. That number is set to rise as more victims are found in the rubble and pulled from collapsed buildings.

A video posted on Twitter by Indonesia's national disaster agency showed that today's quake caused more buildings and power lines to collapse.

Across much of the island, a popular tourist destination, once-bustling villages have been turned into virtual ghost towns. "I do hope the government can help", she said.

While exchanging messages on Facebook about the quake, many Indonesian speakers used the word "selamat", which has several meanings including "safe", "unhurt" or "congratulations" depending on the context.

Muhammad Zainul Majdi, the governor of West Nusa Tenggara province, said there was a critical need for medical staff, food and medicine, according to Ireland's RTE.

Thousands of people have been sleeping in makeshift shelters or out in the open.
