China denies entry to Disney's Winnie the Pooh film

It is unclear why the Chinese government denied the request and Chinese authorities do not provide reasons to Hollywood studios when they disallow screening of their movies, the source said. It started when Xi visited the U.S. in 2013 and an image of him and his former American counterpart Barack Obama walking together spurred comparisons to Winnie, a portly Xi, walking with Tigger, a lanky Obama.

Although no official reason has been given for Christopher Robin's banishment from China, which operates a strict quota on foreign film, the ban comes on the heels of "several Pooh crackdowns", says Sky News.

In 2014 social media users poked fun at the Chinese president's awkward handshake with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with an image of Winnie the Pooh shaking hands with Eeyore.

Ever since, the memes have taken a life of their own so much that the Chinese authorities have been banning the images of the Disney character on social media since a year ago.

Disney's A Wrinkle In Time was also denied release in China. The government responded by cracking down on images of the paunchy cartoon character.

Censors began cracking down on such images after comparison grew and memes went viral.

Disney's live-animated hybrid "Christopher Robin" - which tells the story of Winnie the Pooh's now grown-up and stressed-out friend and how he reunites with his old stuffed friend - debuted in second place at $24.6 million.

While China's film regulator does not give direct feedback on specific movies, it has released regulations in the past that say it bars subversive themes, homosexual content and excessive violence. Instead of restricting the audience age, the country opted to ban the film altogether because of nudity, violence and graphic language.
