Canadian police say at least 4 dead in shooting

Canadian police said Friday that two of the four killed in a shooting in the eastern city of Fredericton, New Brunswick are police officers.

At 8:45 a.m. ET, police confirmed a suspect was in custody and the investigation was ongoing.

Toronto, Canada's largest city, has had 241 shooting incidents this year, resulting in 30 deaths, a 30 percent increase in fatalities.

Fredericton Police are responding Brookside Drive area.

Moore said he heard approximately four gunshots within a five-minute timespan during that hour.

At the time, the incident was one of the worst of its kind in Canada, where gun laws are stricter than they are in the USA and deadly attacks on police are rare.

MacCoubrey says police have been searching the complex and he's been sitting on the floor of his home away from windows.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the news "awful" and said the federal government is "following the situation closely". My heart goes out to everyone affected by this morning's shooting.

They also asked people in the area to stay inside and to lock their doors.

Bad news coming out of Fredericton.

In 2014, a shooting in Moncton, New Brunswick left three Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers dead and two wounded.

CBC reported that police evacuated an apartment block near the man's house shortly after 9 am.

UDPATE: At this time we can confirm that we have one suspect in custody.

Brookside Dr is a residential road in the north end of Fredericton.
