Bay County Health Reports Second Human Case Of West Nile Virus

Four regions of the state remain under a high-risk warning for West Nile, including north-central, south-central, northwest and southwest Kansas. Most people who are infected with the West Nile Virus have no symptoms or experience very mild symptoms three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito.

West Nile-positive insects were also caught in Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, New Canaan, Stamford, Stratford and Waterbury earlier this year.

According to officials, there were three reported cases of West Nile virus in the county previous year. A high risk means many people in the area may become infected with West Nile Virus. However, the majority of people infected with the virus do not get sick.

Amler added that people spending time outdoors should use repellents "from dawn to dusk". Knowing which kinds of mosquitoes are active in our state is critical for our disease prevention strategies.

West Nile does not spread through coughing and sneezing or touching a live animal that's infected with the virus. "So does receiving an organ transplant", according to the CDC, which also noted the risk can be lessened by wearing long sleeves and trousers, using insect repellent and keeping screens on windows and doors.

Make sure you have good screens on your windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.

To keep mosquitoes away, start by controlling their most common breeding sites. Turn wading pools upside down when not in use. It was first found in the U.S.in 1999 and was detected in Arizona in 2003.

Symptoms include fever, headache, weakness, muscle pain, arthritis-like pain, gastrointestinal symptoms and rash.
