Woman Harassed For Puerto Shirt While Cop Looks On

Mia Irizarry was supposed to be celebrating her 24th birthday at an IL park last month, but a drunk man turned it into an unsettling scene over her Puerto Rico flag shirt.

Later in the video, a female officer can be seen arriving on the scene and directly engaging the man.

"All people are welcome in the Forest Preserves of Cook County and no one should feel unsafe while visiting our preserves", the park service wrote.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America", he said.

After the two quibbled about the USA government's relationship with Puerto Rico, Irizarry asked the man what the point of his agitation was.

"You never know, you're right", Connor says.

"Officer, I'm renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt I'm wearing, ' Irizzary then tells the cop, who had already been called to the scene to investigate Trybus" intoxicated behavior. "Why is she wearing that s-?"

At one point, the man approaches Irizarry and screams, "You're not going to change us". No, the world is not going to change the United States of America.

"Are you a citizen?"

Mia Irizarry was just trying to celebrate her 24th birthday at the park on June 14.

"Are you a United States citizen?" he asked again, prompting Irizarry to say she is.

Preckwinkle said she assured Nevares the officer's actions don't reflect Cook County's values.

"As you can see, the police are not even - he's not even grabbing him". "This guy's just walking up to me, he basically got in my face, damn near nearly touched me". She later says in the video, about the officer, "He didn't do anything". She wrote on Facebook, "the man was charged and left handcuffed in the back of a squad auto". 'I told him I felt uncomfortable multiple times and he did not do anything'. When the brother gets in the man's way and stops him from coming back toward Irizarry, the officer then appears to get involved and warns the brother.

"If you're drunk, you don't belong here", she is heard telling the man.

The man was placed under arrest and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

Irizarry recorded the exchange in a Facebook Live video that has since been viewed more than 1.4 million times and drawn outcry from local leaders, members of Congress and the Puerto Rican governor himself.

The June incident, which the governor of Puerto Rico said "appalled, shocked, and disturbed" him, spread shock on social media. "He failed to de-escalate the situation and therefore did not ensure a citizen's safety".

Rosello also called on Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle to take the matter "into her hands". We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background.

"After the incident, we immediately launched an investigation pursuant to our personnel policies into the response of our officer", it said, in a series of posts on Twitter.

Last month, Mia Irizarry was celebrating her birthday at Forest Preserves of Cook County in IL.
