White House mulls Putin's proposal for tit-for-tat questioning

At the press conference with Mr. Putin, Mr. Trump refused to directly say Russian Federation was responsible for hacking the Democratic National Committee and meddling with the 2016 presidential election.

Trump's comments came a day after he walked back his public questioning of USA intelligence findings of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Within the (several) emojis in Hayden's response, he said: "I'm not laughing".

If Kimmel prefers a leader other than Trump, someone should inform him that he is free to leave the country.

Donald Trump reiterated the statement that Democrats and the press are the enemy just before his summit with Putin kicked off earlier this week, launching into them in a tweet while he was en route to Helsinki.

"It was successful overall and led to some useful agreements".

But the USA leader declined to say whether he thinks Putin is lying in saying he did not meddle in Trump's 2016 campaign to help him defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton, an outcome Putin said he wanted to happen.

"I don't think there's any question in the intelligence community or at DHS that Russians attempted to infiltrate and interfere with our electoral system", Nielsen said.

But senior Russian officials described Monday's Trump-Putin summit as going "super" for them. Trump notably flip-flopped repeatedly over what exactly he said to Putin at the summit, and whether he believes that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election campaign on Trump's behalf.

In full damage-control mode earlier this week, Trump back-pedaled on his explosive comments and claimed he misspoke during the press conference.

Sanders called the legislation "hypothetical" and declined to say whether the president would back it.

His comments also come less than a month after he said members of the press should be "free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their jobs", in the wake of a deadly shooting in a Maryland newsroom of the Capital Gazette that killed five people on June 28.

Trump asserted Wednesday at the White House that no other American president has been as tough on Russian Federation.

Before McConnell announced Thursday's vote on the Schumer-Menendez-Schatz resolution, Senate Republicans blocked two efforts to bring up resolutions affirming lawmakers' support for the intelligence community's assessment, the special counsel's probe into alleged ties between Trump and the Kremlin, and urge the president to take a harder stand against Russian Federation.

Critics have accused him of siding with Russian Federation over his own country by failing to criticise Moscow for what USA intelligence agencies past year described as Moscow's interference in the 2016 election in an attempt to sow discord, aid Trump's candidacy and disparage Trump's Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

In public, Russian officials have been consistent in their praise of the summit and criticism of Trump's opponents, while also exercising caution about taking aim at Trump himself.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is due to testify before the Senate next week about the summit.

"We need a new positive agenda, aimed at working together and finding common ground", he said.
