US Border Patrol reportedly stops Canadian fishing boats in disputed waters

"We are in a different time and Border Patrol is patrolling..."

There is a tiny island located on the coast of the Canadian province New Brunswick and American state ME that adding to the dispute. Canadian fishermen are being "harassed", he charged. "As far as I'm concerned, it needs to stop immediately", Doucet told the Post.

The spokesperson said that border agents do not board Canadian vessels in the so-called "grey zone" around the island without consent or probable cause and only conduct interviews "as a vessel runs parallel to it, bow to stern". "Law Enforcement at the Border is doing a great job, but the laws they are forced to work with are insane".

Canadian fishermen say two vessels were approached and their crews questioned by border agents, in Canada's legal waters, late last month around Machias Seal Island and North Rock. "Our understanding is that this was part of a regular exercise being conducted along the US marine border".

The group said it's working with the Canadian government to ensure their members can continue to use the fishery in a "normal manner", noting that they have previously enjoyed a "respectful and cordial" relationship with their American counterparts.

"There's been a bit of a misunderstanding there somewhere", Cook told the newspaper.

In a Facebook post, the Association's Chair said the USA officials claimed they were "looking for illegal immigrants" and that border officials have stopped at least ten fishing boats in the past two weeks.

The agency couldn't say how numerous vessels stopped were fishing.

"That wasn't coincidence", Cook said.

"Typical American bullies", said Cook, who said he was "not surprised to see the Americans trying to push people around".

Machias Seal Island lies between a grey area in the Canadian and American border which the U.S. has recently begun monitoring more closely. The island lies about 10 miles offshore between the Gulf of ME and the Bay of Fundy.

"They claim to be looking for illegal immigrants", said Cook in his Facebook posting.

Spokesman John Babcock said the Canadian government is also talking with USA agencies, though he did not provide details about the fishermen's allegations or Ottawa's response.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry said it had launched an inquiry into the incident off Machias Seal Island, which Canada insists is its territory.

US Customs and Border Protection and the US embassy in Ottawa were not available for comment because of the Independence Day holiday in the US.

The agency was conducting patrols to enforce immigration laws and other potential violations of federal law, the statement said, adding that among the Canadian vessels that were stopped, no immigration arrests were made.

Those types of agreements were brokered long before President Donald Trump took office, but Gilbert said that due to his administration's aggressive border-security policies (not to mention the ongoing trade war between Canada and the US), Canadians are beginning to regret giving the US so much authority. "It wasn't just in the gray zone".

Machias Seal Island is roughly 19 kilometres southwest of Grand Manan Island and 16 kilometres from the coast of Maine.

For hundreds of years, lobstermen in the United States have sailed the chilly waters off New England during the summer, lowering and raising traps along the ocean floor. In 2007, according to the National Post, an American fisherman had his thumb torn off when his equipment became tangled during a dispute with a Canadian competitor.

The Canadian flag flutters in the breeze on September 8, 2003, by the lighthouse at Machias Seal Island. The waters near the island are referred to as the "gray zone" because both Canada and the US claim the island.

There's no telling just how American policing of the waters in the Gulf of ME will affect the Canadian fishing industry there.

He has argued that Canada and the USA should submit the disagreement to arbitration at the world court.

Tensions are ratcheting up on the border - but not that border, the other one.
