UK woman dies after poisoning by Soviet-era nerve agent

The woman, identified by police as Dawn Sturgess, 44, was exposed to Novichok last week after handling a contaminated item.

The Metropolitan police have launched a murder investigation after Dawn Sturgess, 44, from Durrington died.

Former Russian spy and double agent Sergei Skripal and his adult daughter, Yulia, were poisoned four months ago in what British authorities deemed a deliberate attack.

A United Kingdom official said yesterday that Mr Rowley, 45, appeared to be in a stronger condition than his partner but remained extremely ill and faces at least a month to six weeks of further treatment if the nerve agent is to be defeated.

"The simple reality is that Russian Federation has committed an attack on British soil which has seen the death of a British citizen", Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson said when asked in parliament about the threat facing people in Britain after the death of Dawn Sturgess.

Earlier on Monday, the Kremlin said it would be "absurd" to suggest that Russian Federation was involved in Sturgess's death.

This is a precautionary measure while the police continue to investigate how they came into contact with the substance.

Ms Sturgess collapsed at about 10.15am on 30 June and was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Sturgess was taken to hospital around 10.15am and Rowley several hours later, around 3.30pm. Russia's official Foreign Affairs Twitter account called the accusations an absurd part of the "Russians did it" mantra.

They are not showing any signs of having been exposed to the nerve agent, and are being screened as a precaution.

More than 100 police officers are working to try and locate a small vial believed to have contained the nerve agent Novichok, which was manufactured in the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Mother-of-three Dawn Sturgess, died at Salisbury Hospital, Scotland Yard said.

Specialists at the nearby Defense Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down, a military research facility, identified the agent used against the Skripals, Sturgess and Rowley as Novichok. "I think someone from counter-terrorism needs to come here and tell us what they know", he said.

He said public health advice was "not to pick up any odd items such as needles, syringes or unusual containers". "The possibility that these two investigations might be linked is clearly a line of inquiry for us".

Officers have found a red Ford Transit van which Mr Rowley travelled in with three other men before falling ill.

Dr Christine Blanshard, medical director at Salisbury District Hospital, expressed her condolences to Ms Sturgess' family and said her staff "did everything they could". "Their evidence is vital for both public safety and for the investigation".
