Tropical Storm Chris to bring showers

Puerto Rico also suffered widespread damage from Hurricane Maria, and Gov. Ricardo Rossello had anxious the island could experience power outages if Beryl arrived as a tropical storm as originally forecast.

The storm that had been the Atlantic season's first hurricane has been losing power, but residents on islands hit hard by storms a year ago stocked up on food and water Saturday and prepared for possible damaging winds, rains and waves.

A state of emergency was in effect, the statement said.

The NHC forecasts the storm to meander off the coast for the next several days.

Dominica and Guadeloupe remain on tropical storm warning while Martinique, St Martin, St Barthelemy, Saba, St Eustatius and St Maarten are on tropical storm watch.

Tropical Storm Chris is expected to bring swell and showers to Bermuda towards the middle of this week.

"Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said in a press conference late Saturday that the island could experience power outages and urged people without sturdy roofs to move in with relatives or a government shelter".

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, Chris remained stationary and was not expected to move in the next few days.

As for Beryl it has lose its circulation and tropical characteristics making it just a remnant low with winds of 45 miles per hour and gust up to 60 miles per hour.

The forecast predicts two to three inches of rain through Tuesday for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Leeward Islands.

In the Atlantic Tropical Storm Chris is slowly beginning to strengthen with sustained winds now up to 50 miles per hour and gusts reaching 60 miles per hour.

National Weather Service meteorologist Carlos Anselmi told the AP that 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) of rain was expected across Puerto Rico, with double that in isolated areas. It was expected to remain nearly stationary over the next few days before growing to hurricane force and moving to the northeast.
