Tropical Storm Chris to avoid New England

Don't panic. The National Hurricane Center says Chris, the third named storm of 2018 in the Atlantic, won't come onshore here but turn and head away from the U.S.

For Sunday afternoon and night, the weather service forecast sustained winds of 20 to 24 miles per hour over the waters.

“But, as Tropical Storm Chris kicks out, it will drag a cold front on its backside which will send increasing cloudiness and decreasing stability Wednesday night and into Thursday.”.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, but forecasters say swells along the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states could produce unsafe surf and rip current conditions.

Chris formed off the coast of North Carolina on Friday and is now about 160 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras.

Forecasters think the storm will not move much for the next day or so.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday that the storm was likely to strengthen.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center. It could pass near or over Nova Scotia and Newfoundland later this week, but is expected to be weaker then.

There is a "moderate risk" of enhanced rip currents developing Monday at the beaches in central and southern New Jersey and southern DE, the National Weather Service said.

The weather service expects those rain bands to periodically affect the Outer Banks through tonight.

The tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued as Beryl "no longer poses a direct threat".

At noon today, Chris was 594 miles west of Bermuda, with winds of about 46mph and higher gusts.

High surf and unsafe rip currents are expected along parts of the Carolina and mid-Atlantic coasts through early week.

The hurricane center said there was a possibility that Beryl's remnant could regenerate into a tropical cyclone in a few days while moving across the Bahamas.

"However, due to the continuing uncertainties associated with Beryl, any possible motion towards the north could bring the system closer to the islands, thus, watches or warnings cannot be ruled out", the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said in its 11am update on Sunday.

Forecasters said conditions could become a bit more favorable for the storm to regenerate later this week.
