Theresa May hopes Donald Trump visit will boost US-UK links

As anti-Trump activists demonstrate during the USA president's visit, supporters will gather in the British capital to welcome him to Britain.

When Donald Trump arrives in the United Kingdom later this week, he'll be laying unusually low for a U.S. president visiting Britain, thanks to the throngs of protests expected in central London.

Invited guests - including a number of business leaders - will eat dinner to the sounds of the Countess of Wessex's Orchestra, which will play a "series of classic British and American hits", according to a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Theresa May.

Norfolk members of Together Against Trump are planning to join protests in London and have organised a coach to get people to the capital.

The U.S. embassy has also responded in kind, issuing a warning to American citizens to "keep a low profile" and "exercise caution" during Trump's visit.

"I said "If the President is coming to town I'll call it the Trump Arms", he said. "You need to be a part of saying no to some of these people". She said they will discuss security and defense, an aspect of the relationship that is causing anxiety for some British politicians.

Ms Elliott, who has lived in London for five years, appealed to anyone out demonstrating to "respectfully disagree" after a warning from the U.S. embassy in London of potential violence. The issue is 'Do they have freedom to protest, freedom to assemble and should they be allowed to do so?

But that could change. The future of its ties is uncertain, muddied by confusion over Brexit.

"The president of the United States of America will regretfully have the red carpet rolled out for him by this Conservative government", Ian Blackford, the Scottish National Party's leader in the Westminster parliament, told lawmakers on Wednesday. "Britain is going to have to look right around the world for allies with which to do trade deals".

Yet according to David Wemer of the Atlantic Council, a new U.S. -U.K. trade deal isn't a high priority for the Trump administration.

Trump is not expected to spend time in central London. After the visit, Trump will decamp to Finland for a one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16.

The U.S. president is also due to travel to Scotland where he owns two golf courses and Scotland's interim police chief has said more than 5,000 officers would be needed for to cover the trip, including specialist riot and armed officers.

Friday will see a meeting between Mr Trump and Prime Minister Theresa May, as they will visit a defence site.
