Suzuki Jimny confirmed for Australia with 1.5L K15B engine

Additionally, a larger 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine will be seen under its hood as well, which will primarily be sold in markets outside Japan, including Europe.

Suzuki has just confirmed the 2019 Suzuki Jimny will go on sale in Australia during the first quarter of next year.

The main engine option will be a 1.5-litre petrol for most markets; 660cc petrol to be Japan-only.

It's also now expected to arrive in the United Kingdom in 2019, earlier than previously thought. For instance, the round headlights are taken off the original Jimny, while the vertical grille, horizontal slits in the clamshell bonnet and "gathered" rear taillights are all from the second-generation auto. Suzuki hasn't revealed acceleration figures, but has said that the Jimny will reach a top speed of 90mph when fitted with the standard five-speed manual gearbox - or 87mph with the optional four-speed automatic. However, the overall design remains chunky, with function favoured over form, to enable users to operate controls and buttons even while wearing gloves. The car's ground clearance is rated at 210 mm, while its boot space of 85 litres can be expanded to 377 litres with the rear seats folded.

The vehicle measures 3,480 mm in length, 1,645 mm in width and 1,725 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,250 mm.

Power will come from a 1.5 litre petrol engine, which Suzuki promise will offer enough torque low down for sticky off-road situations.

Economy figures are pegged at 41.5mpg and 37.6mpg for the manual and automatic respectively, with Carbon dioxide figures of 154g/km and 170g/km.

The four-wheel drive system in the Jimny can be switched between two-wheel and four-wheel drive alongside the low range transfer gear that offers more torque to aid with traction on slopes.

As diminutive as it is (3480mm overall on a 2250mm wheelbase, 1645mm wide and 1725 high) the new Jimny still has a separate ladder frame and old-school rigid axles - albeit with coil springs all round - and it is still one of the most ruggedly built beetle-crushers on the planet.

There's also modern safety stuff like Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure and High Beam Assist as well as Hill Hold and Descent Control and Traffic Sign Recognition. We anticipate a premium on the current car's £12,999 starting tag given the Jimny's new tech, though it should still remain a small, cheap off-roader.
