Samsung’s biggest factory will be inaugurated in India today

In front are open fields with grazing cattle, to the left are under-construction residential societies and to the right is its existing facilty - this where Samsung has set up what is the world's largest mobile factory.

The new facility will help Samsung double its current capacity for mobile phones in Noida to an annual 120 million units after the phased expansion plan is complete, the company's statement said.

Samsung Electronics, the South Korean maker of Galaxy smartphones, said it is opening the world's largest mobile phone manufacturing facility on the outskirts of the Indian capital, as smartphone demand in the country surges. The plant started with the manufacture of televisions way back in 1997, and mobile phone manufacturing unit was added in 2005.

Speaking before cutting the ribbons of the new facility, PM Modi said the new unit will be a matter of pride for not just India, but Uttar Pradesh and Noida. Both leaders will also visit a Samsung plant which is located in Noida.

Korea's main export items include automobile parts, telecommunication equipment, hot rolled iron products, petroleum refined products, and nuclear reactors. In 2003, refrigerator production began.

PM Modi along with South Korean president Moon Jae-in will be inaugurating the facility in Noida at 5 pm Monday.

Samsung has been enjoying a feast in the smartphone market, especially in India, where it has the tag of highest selling mobile brand, after Xiaomi. The plant spans 35 acres (141 thousand sq.m.) and aims to increase overall production of devices in India by 50%. Samsung possesses five R&D centres across Indian and retail outlets sum up to 1.5 lakhs in total. "It makes sense for Samsung to build a bigger manufacturing base here", Jaipal Singh, Senior Market Analyst, IDC, told IANS. Ties were then elevated to "special strategic partnership" with Modi seeking South Korean investments in many flagship programmes of the government including "Skill India" and "Make in India". Last year, in June 2017, the South Korean giant had announced Rs 4,915 crore investment to expand the new Noida plant.
