RSPCA baffled by 'drunk' seagulls spotted staggering around smelling of booze

Animal rescue groups in the United Kingdom have reported that they have seen a high number of cases of drunk seagulls in recent weeks.

One RSPCA centre in West Hatch near Taunton, Somerset has reportedly had to deal with nearly 30 paralytic birds in a two week period, some of which have even been puking from excessive alcohol consumption.

RSPCA officers Jo Daniel, Clara Scully and Paul Adams have collected several seagulls with the same symptoms in recent weeks.

RSPCA vet David Couper urged vets to look out for the signs after he treated a number of the gulls at the charity's West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Taunton.

The animal welfare charity is now urging local breweries, distilleries and alcohol producers to check that their waste is secure. "We took some video of one of the birds who is staggering around and losing his balance just like a person would if they'd had too much to drink".

"Drunk" gulls who appear disoriented, confused and struggle to stand have been picked up along the south coast.

The RSPCA is urging local breweries and distilleries to check waste is secure and that wildlife can not get to it.

The charity described the effect on the birds as similar to how a human would react to excessive alcohol.

Another is that the greedy gulls have scoffed grain by-products from a brewery in the area.

However, most of the birds seem to recover after vomiting, she said.

Anyone with concerns for the welfare of a bird or animal can contact the RSPCA's 24-hour helpline on 0300 1234 999 for advice or to request assistance.
