Royalty, the pope, and now Trump - Putin makes everyone wait

Security staff push out a man after a scuffle prior to a press conference after the meeting of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, Finland, Monday, July 16, 2018.

In a weekend interview with CBS News, Trump admitted that Russian Federation remains a foe, but he put Moscow on a par with China and the European Union as economic and diplomatic rivals. "They had bad defenses and they were able to be hacked".

The summit began with a one-on-one meeting between Trump and Putin - with only translators present - which blew past its scheduled 90 minutes.

"I think we have a lot of foes", Trump told CBS Evening News in a segment of an interview that first aired on "Face the Nation". I have President Putin.

Speaking during a joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, he reiterated that there was "no collusion" between his campaign and the Russian government. Trump said Washington and Moscow also wanted to help the Syrian people on a humanitarian basis.

"We will, of course, ask your favorite question about meddling", Trump told reporters last week.

He said Putin would deny any attempt to disrupt USA elections.

Trump said last week that he would raise the meddling issue again with Putin, but questions have been swirling about whether Trump will sharply and publicly rebuke his Russian counterpart for the interference that prompted a special investigation probe that Trump has repeatedly labeled a "witch hunt".

Putin will likely not be shooting for official recognition of Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea or easing of the crippling U.S. sanctions, aware that the U.S. Congress would never allow such action.

Trump calls the European Union, Russia, and China 'foes' of the US
Trump-Putin summit kicks off in Helsinki

Prior to playing the clip, CNN's Senior International Correspondent Frederick Pleitgen noted, "the Russians were taking a very similar line to President Trump". Trump tweeted hours before the meeting.

"That's what one of the purposes of this meeting is, so the president can see eye-to-eye with President Putin and ask him about it", Bolton said.

Listing the European Union before China and Russian Federation - both of which have had a more hostile relationship with the USA - would likely surprise a lot of people, Glor said.

"Russia and the United States are now facing totally different challenges".

Mr Trump said he hopes for better relations with the Russian leader. She added that Trump also said: "Don't walk away".

The private session was to be followed by a bigger meeting including the two presidents' senior aides and advisers.

"We will have discussions on everything from trade to military to missiles to nuclear to China, we'll be talking a little bit about China (and) our mutual friend President Xi [Jingpin]".

"You can't solve problems if you're not talking about them", said Jon Huntsman, the USA ambassador to Russian Federation, in a briefing before the meeting. And when another user tweeted "holy f****n s**t" following the news conference, Hayden responded, "I agree".
