Rhino poachers killed by lions at a South African game reserve

The reserve's statement said it is clear the poachers had walked into a pride of six lions and that some of the poachers, if not all, were killed.

A group of poachers illegally entered a South African reserve and planned to kill rhinos.

In 2016, poachers hacked off the horns and killed three rhinos at the Sibuya Game Reserve.

The game reserve is one of the most popular in the Eastern Cape, and it is visited by many British tourists.

"They strayed into a pride of lions - it's a big pride so they didn't have too much time", Sibuya Game Reserve's owner, Nick Fox, told AFP Thursday.

An ax, shoes, and gloves were found later when police and an anti-poaching unit arrived.

Fair game? Hunting hunters for Rhinos died for hunting and ate by lions Men entered the Sibuya Game Reserve on the armed southeast coast with a high powered rifle and an ax in the early hours of Monday.

"It now appears likely that the dog had been alerted by something else out of the ordinary coming from the lions", the Facebook post said.

Over the last few days game guides and anti-poaching staff have continued to drive game viewing vehicles in the vicinity of this pride to check for any behavioural differences and they have confirmed that to date there have been none.

Following the attack, the lions were shot with a anesthetized dart so forensic teams could sift through the immediate area for further clues.

A May 2018 "60 Minutes" report revealed that they are being slaughtered at the shocking rate of three a day at the hands of poachers like the group killed in Sibuya.

"Although we will continue to be extremely vigilant we remain positive that this incident will not necessitate any changes to the status quo", he said.

The police and Anti-Poaching Cluster were immediately notified of the incident. According to stats from the South African government, more than 1,000 rhinos were killed in South Africa a year ago.
