Northeast BC unemployment rate dropped almost one percent in June

"If the relative softness of prior months' jobs figures were not enough to move Governor Poloz and company off a July hike, there is nothing in this latest data likely to do the trick", says TD Bank in a July 6 report on Canada's June employment data.

In an estimated labour force of 42,700, there were 39,700 employed and 3,000 unemployed, according to the survey released July 6.

The jobs report Friday showed that, compared with a year earlier, overall employment was up 1.2 per cent last month following the creation of 214,900 jobs.

Nationally, the jobless rate was also up last month to 6%, from 5.8% in May. The local jobless rate in June 2017 was 7.0 per cent.

At the same time, the unemployment rate on the West Coast ticked up 0.4 percentage points to 5.2 per cent as more people entered the workforce looking for work.

The rise comes despite the fact the country gained 31,800 jobs, which were mostly part-time positions.

Canadian government bond prices were higher across a flatter yield curve, with the 10-year rising 18 Canadian cents to yield 2.126 percent.

"It remains to be seen if a rebound in the private sector will occur given growing trade uncertainties".

Employment increased in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

The May numbers show that imports expanded 1.7 per cent, while exports dipped 0.1 per cent.

The report showed that Canada's trade surplus with the USA narrowed to $3.3 billion in May, from $3.7 billion April, as more imports headed north across the border and south-bound exports decreased.
