New road signs can catch motorists using mobile phones while driving

People using their phones while driving will be getting warning messages if they do so in Norfolk. Using a directional antenna, the detector picks up radio waves emitted from a phone handset, and measures the signal strength and length of activation.

The sign's introduction comes amid increasing concern about the risks posed by using a phone while driving. Though the signs won't record any footage, meaning no fines will be issued based on the data they collect, the data will be shared with police to arrange possible crackdowns in the future in the areas where cellphone use is most prevalent.

The signs have been developed by warning signs specialist Westcotec alongside the road safety team at Norfolk County Council.

It is the first system of its kind to be used on roads in the United Kingdom and was developed by warning sign specialists Westcotec along with Norfolk County Council's road safety team.

Mr Spinks said: 'The aim of the technology is to remind drivers of the law and to get off their phones'.

"This device is purely about education, warning drivers and being able to identify when the driver was on the phone", the company says.

Those caught using their mobile phones at the wheel by the police in the United Kingdom face a £200 fine and six points on their licence, following the introduction of tougher laws a year ago.

However, the system won't be able to tell whether the phone is being used by drivers or passengers in the front seat, so the road sign will light up in both cases.

The new system comprises a sensor capable of detecting vehicles where there are active 2G, 3G and 4G phone signals.

"Using a phone at the wheel is one of the fatal four road offences which can have devastating consequences if it causes a fatal or serious collision".

"We are glad to assist Norfolk County Council in promoting awareness about the dangers of mobile phone use in the vehicle". Norfolk County Council road safety team will be working closely with the roads policing team to share statistics provided by the detection system.
