Netflix launches ‘smart downloads’ to queue your next offline episode automatically

It doesn't use any more storage than the last episode you watched and saves you having to delete old episodes before you can download more.

Netflix is figuring out how to make TV work on your smartphone, where downloading a TV show can mean less room for selfies or devour your data plan.

Netflix subscribers with plenty of available mobile data and a high-end smartphone would therefore be more likely to manually download shows and movies, and often download a number of episodes, or even an entire season, in a single go. Once the feature is enabled, as soon as you're done watching a downloaded episode or two on your device, the Netflix app will download the next one whenever you're connected to WiFi and delete the previous downloaded ones so that you save a ton of storage in the process.

The basic Netflix plan starts at $7.99 which allows you to stream content in standard definition on one display.

"Whenever possible, we want Netflix to do the work for you", said Cameron Johnson, director of product innovation at Netflix.

Really good news for people that watch Netflix while travelling.

.

Additionally, the feature is only available on Android devices for now, though it is safe to assume it will be landing on iOS in the foreseeable future.

Smart downloads are one-for-one. Smart downloads does that automatically.

The feature is flawless for those who love binge watching TV shows, don't want to burn through their data allowance, and certainly do not like the process of going through the download process manually. Control of the new feature still lies with the user, as-should you choose to do so-you can turn it off and enjoy downloads the old-fashioned and inherently more annoying way too.

It's limited to episodic TV series, not movies, standup specials or other kinds of programming.
