Luke Matheny posts heartfelt note about his father’s career with the Cardinals

Acknowledging that his job had been on the line since last season, fired St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny still expressed thanks to his now-former team.

St. Louis has missed the playoffs the last two seasons and now sits seven games out of first place in the NL Central with a 47-46 record.

Matheny's record as the 49th manager of the Cardinals is 591-473, ranking him 5th on the all-time list for the team.

Mike Matheny took over as the Cardinals manager in November 2011 and lead the team to the postseason four consecutive years from 2012 to 2015.

The release also says hitting coaches John Mabry and Bill Mueller have been relieved of their duties.

It marks the first time the Cardinals have changed managers during a season since 1995, when Joe Torre was replaced by Mike Jorgensen.

While the team won't hold an official news conference until tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m., President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak offered some words on the subject. The Cardinals acquired cleanup hitter Marcell Ozuna from the Miami Marlins during the off-season, and they had high hopes for right-hander Alex Reyes in his return to the rotation after missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery. The Cardinals have underperformed on offense and struggled in recent weeks amid reports of locker room discontent - primarily between struggling outfielder Dexter Fowler and Matheny.

Ozuna has failed to live up to lofty expectations, hitting.268 with 10 home runs.

He managed eight seasons in the Cardinals' minor league system.

Since then, the squad has cooled significantly, and has been up and down this season. He was asked what kind of message that personnel move sends to the rest of the Cardinals players.
