Hurricane Beryl could hit parts of the Caribbean

A unique aspect of Beryl, is that it is the furthest southeast that a named storm has ever formed this early in the hurricane season.

Tropical Depression Beryl is seen in this NASA handout satellite image dated May 29, 2012.

- Beryl has become the first hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Maximum sustained winds estimated for Hurricane Beryl is about 75 miles per hour and hurricane force winds are limited to 10 miles northeast of the centre, the DDM said. However, it is expected to gain speed on Friday before downgrading late Saturday to a tropical storm or a strong trough by late Sunday or Monday.

Although there's no guarantee it will turn into a tropical storm, and the system is not expected to make landfall, it could continue circling a few hundred miles off the coast of North Carolina and SC for a few days, according to hurricane experts at AccuWeather.

Will Beryl affect the Caribbean?

Beryl is expected to hit the eastern Caribbean as a hurricane instead of dissipating, threatening islands still trying to recover from last year's storms, forecasters said Friday.

Another tropical wave, known as Invest 96-L, near Bermuda may also become a depression or a storm by next week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The NHC's forecast discussion advises, however, that Beryl's small size means "there is greater uncertainty than usual regarding Beryl's intensity forecast".

The National Hurricane Center is tracking two systems in the Atlantic.

The storm is heading west-northwestward towards the Lesser Antilles at a fairly slow pace but is expected to gain forward momentum through the weekend. "It would be best if they are completed by June 1st at the start of hurricane season".
