Urgent increase in hepatitis testing and treatment needed

Who is at risk of a hepatitis C infection and why?

Singh said health authorities in the region should deploy clear messaging tactics regarding signs and symptoms of hepatitis so that people can get tested and seek treatment and also how its spread can be prevented.

Hepatitis, with five types of viruses namely A, B, C, D and E, refers to the inflammation of liver and can be self-limiting or progress, causing liver fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer. Unless detected and treated, it can lead to disease, cirrhosis or liver cancer.

There are multiple groups who are at risk for Hepatitis C. It can spread through the skin and blood or it can spread through sexual contact.

The global health agency, while raising the alarm on the World Hepatitis Day, marked on Saturday, said that action was needed to find, test and treat millions of people unknowingly infected with viral hepatitis.

Major risk factors for the transmission of Hepatitis B and C infection includes therapeutic injections, syringe reuse, surgery, improper sterilization of invasive medical devices, blood transfusion, hospitalization and sharing of razors while getting the shave from barbers.
