Fourth of July 2018 forecast: Will the heat continue?

The Excessive Heat Warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, while an Excessive Heat Watch will be in effect from Monday evening through Monday evening.

Almost 100 million people could see temperatures climb above 95 degrees Fahrenheit this week, with a majority of those residing in the eastern third of the nation. With the humidity, it will feel around 105 degrees.

A heat advisory is also in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday through 9 p.m. Thursday, July 5.

The weather service says this oppressive heat dome will remain anchored in place over the Mid-Atlantic through the middle part of the week. Both Saturday and Sunday will be sunny with a slight drop in humidity.

Cooling centers and pools have opened throughout the city as the heat sets in for an extended sweltering stay through the Fourth of July holiday. The next chance for rain is expected Friday.

The city could top 90 for up to seven consecutive days this week, something the National Weather Service in NY has said happens about once every 33 years.

Some inland areas of ME, such as Fryeburg, could find themselves in a heat wave, which is defined as three consecutive days of 90-degree temperatures. The heat index soared to over 100 degrees in some sections of New York, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Sunday. "Active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors".

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors". Avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, especially between the hours of noon and 6 p.m.; the rest of us can help by not filling the vehicle during these times.

Under those circumstances, you should move to a cooler location, loosen your clothes, lie down, apply wet, cool cloth to as much of your body as possible and sip water.

If you are looking for another way to cool off, city beaches are open.
