Federer wastes match point, loses to Anderson at Wimbledon

Federer beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the Round of 16 to progress through to the quarter-final stage where he will meet South African and world number eight Kevin Anderson.

Federer was appearing at Wimbledon for the 20th time and 15 years after he first won the title, there were inevitably questions about whether the father of four had played his last match at his favourite tournament.

Federer eventually stemmed the tide with a love hold, and the set was back on serve when Anderson failed to clear the tape with a forehand after saving two break points.

But this time Federer cracked, serving his first double fault at 11-11 to give Anderson the crucial break that ushered the Swiss legend to the exit door. Anderson will take on the victor of Milos Raonic and American John Isner. Nadal has breezed through the draw so far and secured another straight-sets win yesterday, beating Czech Jiri Vesely 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

"I think Rafa and Del Potro had to be on Centre Court", Murray told BBC.

There was little sign of the drama which unfolded when Federer raced through the first set in 26 minutes.

And he had held serve 81 games in a row at the grass-court major, a streak that grew to 85 before Anderson broke him a surprising total of four times.

By contrast, eight-time champion Federer, and Nadal, the title victor on two occasions, have played exclusively on the 15,000-seater Centre Court.

Anderson, meanwhile, is coming off a four-set win over Gael Monfils that saw three of those sets go to a tiebreaker.

Djokovic had to play that fourth round on Tuesday and quarter-final on Wednesday when he was forced to retire against Tomas Berdych with an elbow injury.

Anderson's reward for his famous victory is a semifinal on Friday (Saturday NZT) against either American ninth seed John Isner or Canadian 13th seed Milos Raonic.

"We'll see. Hopefully", said Djokovic when asked if he expected to face Japan's Kei Nishikori on the most famous arena in tennis.

There was still the small matter of holding serve but a 28th ace helped settle Anderson's nerves and be brought up match point with a massive forehand before completing a remarkable victory with a first serve that Federer could not handle.

Ramos then hit Djokovic with a time violation warning for taking too long to serve in the seventh game of the fourth set.
