Djokovic slams Wimbledon crowd after being booed

That enthusiasm carried over to Wimbledon as fans packed Centre Court at the All England club to watch Britain's Kyle Edmund take on Novak Djokovic in the round of 32 on Saturday.

After saving two break points in his first service game, Edmund dialled up the power and broke at the fourth time of asking to lead 4-3.

And, for a while, it seemed this feelgood Saturday would get even better as he went shot for shot with a clearly rattled Djokovic, securing the first set in just under 50 minutes with a succession of booming forehands that left his experienced rival flat-footed. "I asked him. So, yes, it was quite a odd decision from [the] chair umpire, but it happens".

First Edmund was furious when an over-rule saw Djokovic awarded a point, before the Serbian reacted with incredulity when what looked a double bounce was not given as Edmund scrambled to retrieve a drop volley.

British tennis No 1 Kyle Edmund.

"I thought the crowd's reaction was quite unnecessary". A couple [of] guys really, you know, pretending they were coughing and whistling while I was bouncing the ball more or less to the end of the match at that end where I received the time violation.

John McEnroe would be surprised to see Edmund come out on top, telling The Tennis Podcast: "He's had a great year so far, he's legitimate, people respect him in the locker room, so we'll see what he's got to offer". Djokovic is playing better because grass I think suits his game at the moment, grass usually suits your game better when you're less confident because it's about staying alive in the points. That's what I didn't like. "That's normal. When you're on Centre Court, to have the crowd behind you, it's a great thing to have". When you're serving well on a grass court, it's good.

This is the fourth successive slam where Edmund finds himself both as the British number one in Andy Murray's absence and the final British singles player standing.

Meanwhile, Djokovic claimed the partisan atmosphere on Centre Court went too far - defending his decision to blow kisses at the crowd as things got tetchy. He is now scheduled to return to action on clay at the Croatia Open, where the tournament director is his agent Lawrence Frankopan, in a week's time before heading across the Atlantic for the North American hard-court swing culminating in the US Open.

"I'm sure they'll factor that in", he said.

"Some of them kept on going, provoking". "I'm going to show that I'm present, as well, that they can't do whatever they feel like doing".

Nishikori and the 15th-seeded Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist, began their match on No. 1 Court only after 7 p.m. local time, meaning light was fading toward the end of the 1 1/2-hour match.

In the women's draw, favoured Simona Halep was bundled out 6-3 4-6 5-7 to surprise Taiwan contender Hsieh Su-wei and Angelique Kerber made light work of Naomi Osaka 6-2 6-4.
