David Beckham Defends England's Raheem Sterling After Criticism

Eric Dier has been astonished by Raheem Sterling's focus and attitude despite negative coverage in sections of the British media ahead of and during the World Cup.

"He had an excellent game against Sweden, running into space and stretching the defence", the former Arsenal striker added.

Sterling squandered a fine opportunity to score in the quarter-final win over Sweden and Wright thinks he's simply suffering from nerves.

But Tottenham midfielder Dier says England still have ambitions to go further, with progress to the semi-final against Croatia on Wednesday not good enough to be classed as a success.

He actually mentioned Sterling a second time, praising his pace and power, and said he and his coaching team would be analysing England more closing over the next two days and passing that information on to his players.

"They are really good at set-pieces and their tall players are unsafe at corners".

"I think Raheem Sterling is an important player because he is fast and unsafe alongside Harry Kane", said Dalic ahead of Wednesday's clash in Moscow.

"But we are looking forward to a different style of game against England because they like to play attacking football".

"We're really happy with where we're at but we believe we can continue this great journey". "We don't fear England or anybody else".

Not many teams are, however, as gifted as the current French set-up, but there is no denying that all four teams which made it to the semi-finals in Russian Federation displayed a certain level of tactical aptitude ingrained in their game.

On a more positive note, he looked forward to playing another attack-minded team in England after his side's relative struggles against the more defensive styles of Iceland, Denmark and Russian Federation.

Playing alongside Liverpool's Dejan Lovren, Vida has been one of the best defenders at Russian Federation 2018 and Dalic said he would be key to Croatia's plans to keeping Kane out, just as they stopped Argentina's Lionel Messi and Christian Eriksen of Denmark.

"I've got one message for Raheem Sterling", Wright wrote in his column for The Sun.

For decades, England managers have been plagued by the dilemma of fitting in the star English players into a single tactical system and still function at an optimal level.

Gareth Southgate's men have reached the country's first semi-final at the tournament since 1990 as the team attempt to emulate the all-conquering side of 1966.
