Additional West Nile Virus-infected mosquito samples found in Dauphin County

Mosquitoes from Bartholomew County are responsible for carrying the West Nile Virus, according to Health Department.

West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. In 2017, for example, Cameron County, on the very tip of Texas, reported 14 confirmed cases of Zika Virus, and 26 cases of Zika the year before. Although it may be hard to do when it's hot, wearing long-sleeves, long trousers and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

Limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito times.

The DOH said the best way to prevent West Nile is to protect yourself from mosquito bites: wear long sleeves and trousers when outdoors; avoid time outside at dawn and dusk when mosquitos are most active; use an EPA-registered insect repellant; protect children and babies with mosquito netting when they are outdoors; mosquito-proof your home; get rid of standing water in things like gutters and empty flower pots, which can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and making frequent changes to birdbath water.

Other precautions people can take to minimize mosquito exposure are to fix or replace all window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside, and reduce or eliminate all standing water.

The county's health department says the tests were done on mosquitoes collected June 28 in Highland Park.

The city Public Health Commission said Friday a mosquito pool in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood tested positive for the virus, which typically causes fever and flu-like symptoms. The program also monitors reports of dead birds (an early sign of the presence of the virus) and investigates areas of stagnant water for the presence of mosquito larvae, specifically from the Culex mosquito, which is the primary carrier of West Nile in IL. Just like in humans, the birds get infected through the bite of an infected mosquito and may pass it onto other mosquitoes that bite them. "This does not mean the average person is at increased risk of getting West Nile Virus".
