US says diplomats in China hit by mystery illness

The diplomats were flown out by the State Department, which also sent in a medical team to evaluate other employees at the American Consulate along with their families, who may be experiencing similar symptoms, according to The New York Times.

President Donald Trump has said he believed Cuba knew about the attacks and could have stopped them.

A USA official, who wasn't authorized to discuss the situation publicly and requested anonymity, said the evacuated Americans are being brought for testing to the University of Pennsylvania.

Global Affairs Canada is working to determine if any Canadian diplomats in southern China have been affected by a mysterious ailment that has already sickened a number of American diplomats and bears similarities to the unexplained illness suffered by Canadian and USA government workers in Cuba.

For its part, China says it has no information concerning the illnesses.

Last year, 24 US government employees and family members in Cuba displayed the symptoms, which were similar to those related to concussions and mild traumatic brain injury, according to the State Department.

The State Department said in a health alert last month that the employee in Guangzhou reported "subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sound and pressure" that had no immediate explanation.

There are roughly 170 American diplomats or employees in Guangzhou, as well as their family members, and a senior USA official said a sizeable number had undergone or would soon undergo testing by the State Department doctors.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called for the US State Department to set up an investigation into why US staff in China have fallen ill with mystery symptoms.

Since 2016, 24 employees at the American embassy in Cuba and their family members have reported similar episodes.

The U.S. first pulled out all nonessential staff in Cuba in September, followed shortly after by the expulsion of 15 Cuban diplomats from their U.S. post.

An examination of more than 20 affected individuals, conducted by University of Pennsylvania researchers and later published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, concluded that the staff affected in Cuba "appeared to have sustained injury to widespread brain networks without an associated history of head trauma".
