Uber, Lyft want to scoot you around San Francisco

In a new report from Axios, it seems that Uber is also interested in the bike-share market and could be looking to make a takeover offer to Motivate, the company behind the likes of the CitiBike and Ford's GoBike.

Under terms of the program, shared-scooter operators were to have had their scooters off the streets by Monday, June 4, and then apply for one of the city's permits starting on Thursday, June 7.

The city of San Francisco said that companies operating electric scooter rental services will need to have a permit in order to do so.

However, there are other companies that have announced interest to provide scooter-sharing service in San Francisco. However this acquisition makes sense for Uber who has recently bought Jump, a company that now has an exclusive permit to run a dockless bike sharing system in San Francisco. The permit process was instituted after thousands of electric scooters descended on San Francisco in April with little to no warning to city officials. Other people complained that riders didn't follow the laws of the road and endangered pedestrians by riding on sidewalks and leaving the scooters wherever they felt like it - blocking parking spots, bike racks and wheelchair accesses.

To apply for a scooter permit the cost is $5,000 and winners will have the pay $25,000 per year to the city and contribute another $10,000 to property repairs as well as maintenance endowment.

"As part of their permit application, companies must demonstrate how they will minimize their impact on San Francisco's sidewalks, while maximizing their transparency to the public", the SFMTA explained in how it'll choose which applicants will receive the permits. The number of permits could double in the program's remaining six months. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which is issuing the permits, said it will likely take until the end of June to finalize the permits. However, only five of the applicants will be granted a permit by the city, with a decision expected by the end of the month. These include the three companies that have already launched fleets in the city - Bird, LimeBike, and Spin - as well as newcomers, such as Lyft, Skip, and the bike-sharing company Ofo.
