Trump's top economic adviser accuses Trudeau of 'backstabbing'

President Donald Trump said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "learned" from the mistake of criticizing him and it's going to cost Canada "a lot of money".

The motion calls on the House to recognize the importance of Canada's "long-standing, mutually beneficial trading relationship" with the US, "strongly oppose" the "illegitimate tariffs" imposed on steel and aluminum, stand "in solidarity" with the Trudeau government's decision to impose retaliatory tariffs and remain united in support of the supply management system of regulating Canada's dairy and poultry industry.

Trump was furious after Trudeau had said at the end of a contentious economic summit in Quebec that he wouldn't let Canada be pushed around in trade relations with the United States.

But Trudeau's absence was also likely part of a deliberate strategy to not add fuel to the Trump fire.

"Trudeau did not make President Trump look weak", Hayden said on CNN Newday Monday. "And Justin. And I said, "Oh that's nice, Justin's giving a" - And then he talked about how they won't be bullied". And I say, 'Push him around? We just shook hands.

Trump went on to say that the U.S. gets "unfairly clobbered" on trade despite "protecting Europe at great financial loss".

Although it is unclear which of Trudeau's statements Trump was calling false, Trudeau said in a news conference Saturday that Canada will "move forward with retaliatory measures" on July 1 in response to the Trump administration's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico.

Still, other Trump advisers had taken up the attack in appearances on Sunday's news shows, leveling more withering and unprecedented criticism against Trudeau, branding him a back-stabber unworthy of Trump's time.

The Canadian lawmakers' solidarity came a day after White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said, "There is a special place in hell" for Trudeau for his "bad faith diplomacy" with Trump, as a dispute over trade escalated.

He made the apology - something that former USA ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman, among others, was demanding that he do - during a Wall Street Journal event today in Washington.

"I think that those are words that I would not have chosen", Short said.

"I think that [Navarro] used language that you wouldn't use with your best friend in a bar".

"On (Trump's) comments, I'm going to stay focused on defending jobs for Canadians and supporting Canadian interests".

Kudlow further called Kim as "crazy nuclear tyrant" as he urged the other members of G8 to support Trump.

Speaking to reporters from her home country, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the US' retraction of support for a shared statement "sobering and somewhat depressing".

Trump refused to sign a joint agreement with US allies at the end of the summit and threatened to cut off trade with them unless deals were renegotiated.
