Trump delivers warning on trade as he leaves G-7 summit

Lashing out at the longtime United States ally and northern neighbour, President Donald Trump tweeted that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is "dishonest & weak" and that the U.S. was pulling back its endorsement of the G7 summit's communique in part because of what he called Trudeau's "false statements" at a news conference.

President Trump took issue with Trudeau's remarks on trade between the USA and Canada, in which the prime minister warned his government would take retaliatory measures if new tariffs were introduced.

"Canadians are polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

Trudeau's office responded later, saying they were focused on what was accomplished at the G7 summit and that the prime minister said nothing at the press conference that he hadn't mentioned "before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President".

He said Saturday that he's also considering scrapping the North American Free Trade Agreement in favor of bilateral trade deals with Canada and Mexico individually.

With his wife Melania back home in Washington, Trump cut a lonely figure on arrival at the golf resort in rural Quebec as he posed with his host Trudeau and his wife Sophie and other first couples. Some countries have retaliated with their own levies on U.S. imports.

The six-plus-one tone of the gathering in Quebec means the leaders from Canada, Britain, the United States, France, Germany Italy and Japan are unlikely to issue a joint statement, too sharply divided on trade or the environment to reach consensus.

"We commit to modernize the WTO to make it more fair as soon as possible".

On 1 June, the United States imposed a 25% tariff for steel and 10% for aluminium on imports from the EU, Canada, and Mexico.

Trudeau also said that Canada will go ahead with retaliatory tariffs from July 1, according to CNN. Trudeau said he "accepted" the long US explanation in the statement about how Washington did not back the Paris agreement.

"I have made it very clear to the President that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said. But he also said, "if the expectation was that a weekend in attractive Charlevoix.was going to transform the president's outlook on trade and the world, then we didn't quite reach that bar".

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things.but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300 percent on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!"

The window to pass a deal in this Congress has nearly certainly closed, observers say, and Mexico will elect a new president on July 1.

The EU said it would stick to the joint communique despite Mr Trump's decision.

Although Trump says his tariffs are necessary to protect USA industry and workers, Canada and the European Union have denounced them as illegal.

For his part, Trudeau has expressed his displeasure over the tariffs (which were invoked citing national security) saying that Canada and the US have had a great relationship over the years.

According to Trump, who blamed the US leaders who preceded him for the current trade deficits, the answer is a change in the entire worldwide trading system.

"Very dishonest and weak".
