Trump confirms North Korea summit will happen June 12 in Singapore

Trump made the announcement on Friday, following a two-hour-long meeting with North Korean senior official Kim Yong-chol at the White House.

There had been speculation in the South Korean media that Gen. Kim would be carrying a letter for Mr. Trump to respond to the one the president sent to the North Korean leader last week.

Kim Yong Chol was greeted at the White House by chief of staff John Kelly and then whisked into the Oval Office.

The contents of the letter were not immediately known.

Kim hoped US-North Korean relations and denuclearisation of the peninsula "will be solved on a stage-by-stage basis" and "he hoped that the solution of the issues will progress through effective and constructive dialogue and negotiation", the report by the North Korean news agency said.

Speaking outside the White House, Donald Trump also said hundreds of new sanctions are ready to go on North Korea, but he would hold off.

Trump described the letter he had received from Kim was "a very nice letter. a very interesting letter".

Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping credit for helping to move the talks with North Korea forward.

"Moscow wants to be in the loop concerning the latest developments, especially with respect to the likely summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un", Lukin said.

Minutes later, the president was again asked about Kim's correspondence. The two men left a 90-minute private dinner at a NY apartment on Wednesday night without providing details about their conversation. The letter, delivered by one of Kim's aides, Kim Yong Chol, was due to be inspected by USA officials and, if cleared, given to Trump, according to administration officials cited in the report. "Our secretary of state is having very good meetings".

Russian Federation is the latest major nation to reach out to North Korea since Trump accepted Kim's proposal for a summit.

North Korea and the United States seem to have reached a broad agreement that North Korea take steps to abandon its nuclear weapons program in a short, compressed period of time in return for the U.S. taking measures to guarantee the Kim Jong-un regime's survival. USA teams also met with North Korean delegations in Singapore and the Korean demilitarized zone.

Trump also stressed the importance of this summit.

The United States, in return for North Korea giving up its nuclear weapons, could potentially loosen sanctions, leading to possible food and other aid to impoverished North Korea and improved ties with South Korea. Moon later told reporters that the two leaders agreed the summit "must be successfully held". Kim Yong Chol, considered the North Korean leader's right-hand man, is the most senior official from Pyongyang to visit the United States in 18 years.
