Trudeau 's Remarks to Cost Canada 'a Lot of Money'

On Saturday, in response to USA sanctions on Canadian steel and aluminum imports, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadians "will not be pushed around" and the imports were "kind of insulting".

But of course Mr. Trudeau knows. I think he should apologize to the prime minister. He also said the US had a trade deficit of $17 billion with Canada, though he implied that it might be as large as $100 billion.

Trump's tirade solidified Canadian politicians of all parties. -Canada relationship in nothing but positive terms.

Trump had made similar remarks late Saturday, accusing the Canadian leader of acting "meek and mild" during talks, before ther press conference. There wasn't really another option for a Canadian politician.

The relationship between the US and its allies was already off-balance after Mr. Trump just a week before the summit imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum from the European Union and Canada.

Earlier on Tuesday at the Washington conference, White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett said the USA and Canada need to "take a deep breath". "I own that. That was my mistake, those were my words".

"Why should I, as President of the United States, allow countries to continue to make Massive Trade Surpluses, as they have for decades, while our Farmers, Workers & Taxpayers have such a big and unfair price to pay?" he tweeted. I like him. But he shouldn't have done that. "We just shook hands!"

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada; he learned", Mr Trump said wagging his finger.

The president ruffled feathers at the G7 summit, not backing down from stiff tariffs on aluminum and steel imports.

Navarro's willingness to walk back his outburst marked a departure from the Trump administration's never-say-you're-sorry approach to political crises. On Tuesday, Mr. Trudeau insisted the U.S. President didn't take the sunset clause off the table.

He called on Trudeau to apologise to Trump. He forced the Canadian PM to react. "That's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

Canada reacted coolly to the apology, with Trudeau declining to answer when reporters asked him whether he accepted it.

Mr. Trump's news conference was also filled with belligerent claims that he had laid down the law on trade, warning that other countries better not follow through with retaliation to his steel tariffs.

White House legislative affairs director Marc Short also sought to distance himself from Navarro's comments and told CNN's John Berman in an interview Monday that "those are words that I would not have chosen".

"The president is using that as a cudgel in the negotiation process", he said.
