Toddlers getting too much sugar in diet

The extra sugar only adds calories and does not contribute anything nutritionally. These children took part in the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey or NHANES that took place from 2011 to 2014.

Another serious situation shapes up in the U.S., as a recent study carried out by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) revealed an increasingly higher added sugar consumption in toddlers. By 19 to 23 months, 99% of children ate an average of over seven teaspoons of added sugar on a given day.

As their names suggest, the former is added to foods as they are processed or prepared while the latter is found naturally in sources like fruits, vegetables, and milk. At present the guidelines recommend using 6 teaspoons or less daily in individuals aged between 2 to 19 years and adult women and less than 9 teaspoons for adult men per day.

America's toddlers are getting too much sugar, according to a new study.

They found that 85 percent of the infants and toddlers consumed added sugar on a given day and that added sugar consumption rose with age. The earlier patient is introduces to high sugar consumption, the heavier the consequences he or she will face during the life. It's been linked to obesity, asthma, dental caries, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. In a 24 hour window period, all the foods that the child was consuming was recorded.

"This is the first time we have looked at added sugar consumption among children less than 2 years old", said Kirsten Herrick, a nutritional epidemiologist at the CDC and the lead author of the study. The Dietary Guidelines 2015-2020 reveals that sugar-sweetened beverages make up 39 percent of added sugars in an average American's diet. She presented the findings on Sunday 10 June at Nutrition 2018, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition held in Boston.

"The easiest way to reduce added sugars in your own diet and your kids' diet is to choose foods that you know don't have them, like fresh fruits and vegetables", Herrick advises.

The added sugar included cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and honey.

According to the American Heart Association, female adults are recommended to eat no more than 100 calories or 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day.

Researchers say 60 percent of children have sugar before their first birthday, and consumption rises with age. Regardless of the recommendations, most people in the US eat more than this limit, research shows.
