Throw away pre-cut melon, CDC warns in multistate salmonella outbreak

Those products have now been linked by officials to a rash of salmonella infections around the county.

Over the weekend, SpartanNash subsidiary Caito Foods said it has voluntarily recalled precut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and mixed fruit containing one of these melons that were produced at its Indianapolis facility because the products might be contaminated with salmonella. It started around the end of April and has spread into Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina and Missouri.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recalled products were sold at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart and Whole Foods Market/Amazon. Whole melon is still OK to eat, the CDC said.

So far no one has died from the infection.

"That's why we exist", he said. Of those, 31 have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported, the CDC said.

Healthy individuals infected with salmonella generally experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Salmonella can result in serious illness and produce significant and potentially fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems the company said.

The illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment, according to the CDC.

Masters said he didn't know where the woman purchased her melon.

Kroger announced last week it had removed the affected products from its stores in IN and MI "out of an abundance of caution", and has temporarily suspended shipments of any new products from Caito Foods.

Hancock Public Health is also contacting local businesses listed in the recall issued by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Recalled products are sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers at a number of different retailers.
