Thomas takes out Criterium du Dauphine

Defending Tour champion Froome, who skipped this year's Dauphine after winning May's Giro d'Italia, is set to chase a joint record fifth title in July with Thomas again expected to be one of his key helpers.

The Astana rider completed the route, which started in Frontenex, in a time of 3:34:11.

Team Sky's Welsh rider Geraint Thomas cemented his control of the Criterium du Dauphine after finishing second on yesterday's 6th and penultimate stage won by Spaniard Pello Bilbao.

Martin slipped down general standings after his team lost time on stage three, but a second-place finish on Thursday's climbing stage, a stage victory on Friday after a well executed attack and today's performance has seen the 31-year-old turn his fortunes right around.

The Welshman finished 60 seconds ahead of nearest rival Adam Yates - who won the final stage of the race.

"Without the boys here I would not have won the Dauphine".

"My role in the team will be as one of the protected guys, Froome is going to be one of the leaders".

It came on a 110 kilometres stage from Frontenex which is nearly a carbon copy of this year's Tour de France stage 11. "I managed to get a few more bonus seconds which is good". "They're super hard climbing stages and even harder over the weekend". France's Romain Bardet, of AG2R, jumped to third from seventh overnight and is at 2min 01sec.

"It's been a learning process starting in a new team so getting this win for UAE is great", he said.

Adam Yates was extremely happy to win the stage after a hard week of racing.

The 32-year-old Thomas, victor of Paris-Nice in 2016, is coming into form at just the right time with the Tour de France a month away.
