Tesla to layoff 9 percent of workforce

"Tesla has grown and evolved rapidly over the past several years, which has resulted in some duplication of roles and some job functions that, while they made sense in the past, are hard to justify today". Musk said the decision was made as the automaker works to become profitable.

Musk referenced "a company-wide restructuring", which was reported last month by Electrek.

Afterward an emotional Musk appeared to signal brighter days ahead for the Tesla when he predicted the company would begin pushing out 5,000 Model 3s per week by the end of June.

Tesla has struggled in recent months to resolve nagging production issues surrounding the Model 3 roll-out.

While that email was sent only to employees, Musk then tweeted the full text immediately afterwards and it is clear that the missive was created to be read by external critics and anxious investors.

Tesla has been burning cash nearly continuously since it was founded 15 years ago.

Tesla is cutting 9% of its workers as part of a reorganization created to reduce costs and help the electric automaker become profitable, according to an email CEO Elon Musk sent to employees Tuesday and obtained by Fortune. That is a valid and fair criticism of Tesla's history to date.

In the note, which he tweeted out after it was leaked to media outlets, Musk said that almost all of the cuts would be salaried positions, and that the production staff is largely unaffected. The majority of Tesla employees working at Home Depot will be offered the opportunity to move over to Tesla's retail locations, according to the memo. The areas were to be outfitted during the first half of this year and staffed by Tesla employees to demonstrate that its panels and batteries have mainstream appeal. Yet, despite our tiny size, Tesla has already played a major role in moving the auto industry towards sustainable electric transport and moving the energy industry towards sustainable power generation and storage.
